The Guoxia 001, Shanghai's first dual-purpose pure electric intelligent vessel, commenced operations on Sept 15, marking a significant milestone in the demonstration and application of pure electric vessels for inland river shipping in Shanghai.

Funded and built by Guoxia New Energy Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd, which was established in Lin-gang's Yangshan Free Trade Zone in 2024, the Guoxia 001 features an innovative design suitable for both container and bulk cargo transportation. Powered by a 1,571-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, the vessel is capable of loading 64 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and operating for 120 kilometers on a single charge.

Operating primarily in the Huangpu and Dazhi river areas, the Guoxia 001 will significantly reduce noise and exhaust emissions along the waterfront, cutting annual carbon dioxide emissions by 450 metric tons.

Looking ahead, the Lin-gang Special Area Administration will collaborate with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dalian Maritime University, and Guoxia New Energy Technology to establish advanced systems, including intelligent auxiliary driving, vessel energy management, and a big data center for real-time monitoring and driver fatigue warning, accelerating the digital, green, and intelligent transformation of shipping in Lin-gang.
